Issues and Challenges

Here some important issues and challenges of the Lack of Access to Essential Medicines:

1

Lack of Access to Existing Medicines: Patents Due to WTO approved laws, any new invention or product that is made (including an essential life saving medicine) is under a patent. This means that no one can reproduce the product without paying the patent owner. Effectively this means that one producer has a monopoly over the creation of essential medicines and can drive the price up as high as he or she wishes.  This makes medicines inaccessible to developing countries that cannot afford the high asking prices.

2

R & D into new drugs

3

Compulsory Licensing/CAMR

4

Lack of Global Governance: Lack of Global Governance that is compounded by local political and socio-economic instability….all the issues won’t be fully realised until there is simultaneously work on the global institutions and collaboration is instituted.
